New window tax credit

There is a new window tax credit out for 2011. It is not as beneficial as the one available in the past couple of years but there is still something there worth looking at. The bill allows a tax credit of up to $200 for Energy Star-qualified windows and skylights and up to $500 for Energy Star-qualified doors for 2011. Keep that in mind when purchasing new windows this year. The best gain will be in your energy bill and comfort of your home when replacing the old single pane and even aluminum windows.

Direct lighting

How much light is right for you? If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen good lighting is very important. Direct lighting on your workspace is important but keep in mind that shadows appear if the light source is directly above your head. Task lighting is great to light those dark places and efficient LED lighting is available for under cabinet placement. If you add a lot of lights but are worried about the energy bill then dimmer switches, LED or CFL lights are great options. You can benefit most by installing your lighting on separate zones to enable using only what lights are needed.
